TOXINS IN PROSPECT PARK LAKE AND ON DOG BEACH


The widespread presence of high toxins in Prospect Park Lake from blue-green algae (BGA) blooms has been confirmed. These toxins can be harmful to people and to animals. Stay out of the lake, and keep children and pets out of it and away from it. Keep dogs away from Dog Beach too.

If people or animals are exposed to a bloom, wash the skin with soap and water or rinse thoroughly with clean water.

When the blooms are widespread, as they are in Prospect Park Lake, they can affect either the entire lake, a large portion of the lake, or most to all of the shoreline.

Blue-green algae is cyanobacteria. A BGA bloom can make water look like pea soup or like green, blue, or red paint. Or, mats of blue or green pond scum can be floating on the water surface or might have accumulated along the shoreline.

The possible effects of the toxins on living creatures are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin or throat irritation, allergic reactions, or breathing difficulties. The toxins can also affect the liver and nervous systems if a lot of water is swallowed.

SPEED HUMPS POSSIBLE IN WINDSOR TERRACE

Transportation Committee Meeting
Monday, August 3rd, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Transportation Committee of Community Board 7 will meet on Monday to consider placing fifteen speed humps in Windsor Terrace on these streets:
  • Windsor Place,
  • Terrace Place,
  • Sherman Street,
  • Seeley Street,
  • Vanderbilt Street,
  • Prospect Avenue,
  • 18th Street,
  • 19th Street, and
  • Kermit Place.

The meeting will be held on Monday, August 3rd, at 6:30 p.m. in Shepherd's Hall at Holy Name Church, 245 Prospect Park West, between Prospect Avenue and Windsor Place. Enter Shepherd's Hall through the parking lot next to the church.

This will not be the last meeting on this issue.

On Saturday, August 1, rain or shine, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Prospect Park will become the pet adoption capital of the borough, as the Alliance for NYC’s Animals (the Alliance), in partnership with The Petfinder Foundation, presents Adoptapalooza, a mega-pet-adoption event, being held for the first time in Brooklyn. More than 150 lovable cats and dogs and kittens and puppies will be available for adoption inside the park at Bartel-Pritchard Square (15th Street and Prospect Park West).


All animals for adoption have been spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Adoption fees vary by group.


Fifteen different Alliance Participating Organizations, including pet shelter and rescue organizations, will be on site-–each offering very special animals in search of their forever homes.Confirmed shelters and rescue groups include Animal Care Centers of NYC, Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF), ASPCA, Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition, Empty Cages Collective, Husky House, K9Kastle, Linda's Cat Assistance, Long Island Greyhound Connection, Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Posh Pets Rescue, Rebound Hounds Res-Q, Windsor Terrace - Kensington's Sean Casey Animal Rescue, Waggytail Rescue, and Zani's Furry Friends.

Brooklyn’s Adoptapalooza will provide an afternoon of fun for people of all ages. In addition to pet adoptions, this family-friendly event will feature free personalized pet tag giveaways and free photo-ops for pets and their people. Dog licensing by the NYC Department of Health and pet preparedness tips from NYC’s Emergency Management will also be available.

The Petfinder Foundation, which provided significant financial support for Brooklyn’s Adoptapalooza, is the event’s premiere sponsor. Other sponsors include PetFirst Pet Insurance, Purina One and Just Right by Purina.

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING SUSPENDED FOR HOLIDAY ON JULY 17TH AND 18TH


Alternate side of the street parking regulations--normally in effect on weekdays and Saturdays so that streets can be cleaned--will be suspended on Friday, July 17th (tomorrow), and Saturday, July 18th, for Eid Al-Fitr.

All other parking regulations, including those for parking meters, will be in effect.

"BROOKLYN BY NAME" TROLLEY TOUR

Bergen, Schermerhorn, Martense, Havemeyer, Berry, and Tompkins are names of some Brooklyn streets, subway stations, and parks. They came from influential and powerful 19th-century Brooklynites who are buried in Green-Wood Cemetery.

Expert tour guide Ruth Edebohls will lead a tour of the burial sites of these people. Learn about their lives, their businesses, and their families and how they become powerful enough to have a street named after them.

Cost: $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and the Brooklyn Historical Society; $20 for non-members.

Green-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant.

KENSINGTON YOUTHMARKET (GREENMARKET) RETURNS FOR FIFTH YEAR

The Kensington Youthmarket returns for its fifth year of supplying our neighborhood with farm-fresh produce. The market will be open on Saturdays, from July 11th to November 21st, opening at 8:00 a.m. and closing at 4:00 p.m. The opening time is an hour earlier than it was last year.

The high-quality food is grown on regional small farms. It includes tomatoes, corn, peaches, apples, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, cilantro, basil, parsley, radishes, beets, carrots, green pepper, red onions, yellow onions, scallions, zucchini, yellow squash, romaine lettuce, and more.

Payment can be made with cash, EBT cards, debit cards, credit cards, WIC checks, and FMNP checks

The farm stand will be set up on Fort Hamilton Parkway, at the corner of E. 5th Street, along the side of the Windsor Terrace Library.
