Alternate side of the street parking regulations for street cleaning will be suspended on Monday, September 1st, for Labor Day. Parking meter regulations will also be suspended.

Labor Day is a legal holiday. On legal holidays, stopping, standing, and parking are permitted (except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect seven days a week).

MISSING SENIOR CITIZEN: YING-TSANG NG

Eighty-nine-year-old Ying-Tsang Ng is missing, the Daily News reports. The last time she was seen, she was leaving her apartment on Coney Island Avenue, near Cortelyou Road. Ms. Ng stands about 5' tall, weighs 100 pounds, and needs medical attention for a condition she has.

If you have any information about Ms. Ng's disappearance, even if it seems minor to you, call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at (800) 577-TIPS, or log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text to 274637(CRIMES) and then enter TIP577.

EXTENDED REGISTRATION FOR ADDITIONAL PRE-K SEATS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT 15

More from City Councilmember Brad Lander on the additional pre-k classes for school district 15, in addition to yesterday's post:
The lottery for more than 100 new, full-day, pre-k seats at the former Bishop Ford High School (in Windsor Terrace) has been extended through Tuesday, September 2nd, in an effort to accommodate more families.

The opportunity is open to all families with eligible 4-year-olds who live in District 15 (you can see what district you are zoned for here).

You still have to apply in person, at P.S. 10 at 511 7th Avenue (at 17th Street), 9 am - 3 pm weekdays (not including Labor Day).  The seats will be allocated by lottery (rather than "first-come, first-served").
To apply, you need to come with your child, their birth certificate, evidence of vaccination, and two proofs of address.

As we wrote yesterday, we're sorry for the last-minute nature of the opportunity, but excited to see New York City moving steadily toward truly universal pre-k, where all 4-year-olds will have the chance to get started on their educational path.

ADDITIONAL PRE-K SEATS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT 15

From City CouncIlmember Brad Lander:
My office has just learned that the New York City Department of Education will be offering a new pre-k opportunity for families residing within District 15.

Beginning this September, seven additional classes will be offered within leased space at the former Bishop Ford High School located at 500 Nineteenth Street, BK, NY 11215. The program will be supervised by senior Principal Laura Scott from PS 10 whose school was recently named a “Reward” school by the New York State Department of Education.

Space is limited and will be reserved for District 15 families on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.  on Tuesday, August 26th at PS 10 located at 511 7th Avenue, BK, NY 11215. Admission to this district 15 program does not provide admission priority to PS 10. Families must bring their child with them and two proofs of District 15 residence, 2010 birth certificate, and vaccination card.

I know this news comes at a time when many families may be on vacation and others have already made plans for the fall in any case.  DOE has been working as fast as possible to make these additional seats available, and this will be good for the future for our district.  We are sending out this notification as quickly as possible after being made aware of the opportunity!

GET FREE DAFFODIL BULBS TO PLANT IN PUBLIC SPACES

Welcome

A friend sent us this message:
I just signed up for free daffodil bulbs from New Yorkers for Parks, and I thought you'd be interested, too!
The Daffodil Project was founded in 2001 as a living memorial to September 11. With nearly five million free bulbs planted citywide by more than 40,000 school kids, parks and gardening groups, civic organizations, corporate volunteers, and other New Yorkers, it is one of the largest volunteer efforts in the city's history.
Bulbs are free to civic organizations, individuals, corporate volunteer groups, schools, and community leaders who commit to planting them in a park or public space such as a schoolyard, street tree pit, or community garden. You sign up for the number of bulbs you want now and then pick them up later this fall when it's time to plant them in the ground.
Sign up for free bulbs online at  http://www.ny4p.org/daffodil-project/registration or http://ny4p.convio.net/site/Survey?ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTION_USER_REQUESTS&SURVEY_ID=1580
Registration closes at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Bulbs can be ordered in quantities of 25, 50, 100, 200, 350, 550, and 1100. The maximum number of bulbs per order is 1100 (two bags).

Brooklyn pick-up dates and locations are Saturday, October 4th, at Seth Low Houses Community Center and Saturday, October 11th, at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket.

The groups will perform from noon to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 23rd, coinciding with the first three hours of the shopping event.

Over 60 retailers are marking down their merchandise in preparation for the Sidewalk Sales event happening from Friday, August 22nd, through Sunday, August 24th, from noon to 6:00 p.m.

Participating retailers will offer 10% off the purchase of any one item valued at $20 to $100, and participating eateries will offer a free can of soda with a food purchase of $5 or more.
