BIG BIG VICTORY AT GOLDEN FARM!

The Golden Farm workers have a contract!
The boycott is over!

Thanks for sending us the announcement of this excellent news, Occupy Kensington.

===========================================

The Golden Farm workers have a contract!

Almost 2 years after it first started, the boycott of Golden Farm is over!

Join the workers for a celebration BBQ on Saturday, 6/28, at 8 pm, at 351 E 4th St.

The contract includes paid sick days, holidays, and vacation time and a small raise which takes their pay above the minimum wage for the first time. It also includes a "good cause" clause, which requires that there be a reason for firing an employee and the right of the workers to have active union representation (something the owner, Sonny Kim, deeply objected to for the last two years).

This victory is a testimony to the determination of the Golden Farm workers, the support they received from their union, RWDSU Local 338, and from our community.

Thank you for your support.

The workers asked that we pass on these messages to the Kensington community.
"We the workers of Golden Farm thank you for all your help, thank you for your time on the picket line. Above all thank you for making this campaign a dream come true - a campaign that nobody stopped, only victory." Yours Truly Martin Gonzalez

"Hi, My name is Roberto and in the name of my co-workers from Golden Farm we greet you most sincerely and thank you very much to everyone of you for the unconditional help. This victory is also yours. Thank you to everyone and God bless you."
Occupy Kensington would also like to thank everyone who supported the boycott by not shopping there but also for all the other acts of support:

Thank you to everyone who spoke to Mr Kim or his manager expressing their support for the workers.

Thank you to the lady who went on vacation and left a note for her apartment sitter telling her where the best local takeouts were and NOT to shop in Golden Farm. (The sitter stopped by our picket line to find out why).

Thank you to the local graphic designer who made us very cool buttons and the teenage Hasidic rapper who composed a song for the workers.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the support fund for Felix's wife and children after he died and everyone who contributed to the Xmas toy drive for the worker's kids.

Thank you to the local blogger who wrote reviews of alternative places to buy good fruit and vegetables.

Thank you to the dedicated few who chalked the word BOYCOTT on the sidewalk day after day.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in front of the store for pickets or rallies and to everyone who stopped by to get updates and find out how the campaign was going.

And thanks also to the members of the Green Party, Socialist Alternative, Occuevolve, and OWS Labor Outreach Committee who helped us sustain the pickets over the course of the last 2 years and to the Rude Mechanical Orchestra for visiting us several times.

What next?

The boycott is over. For the workers in Golden Farm, the struggle continues. They have a contract; now they must ensure that Mr Kim abides by it. Occupy Kensington will continue to be in contact with the workers and let Mr. Kim know that our community continues to take an interest in their situation.

Occupy Kensington continues to meet, discuss, and campaign on issues both local and further afield. We have recently gotten involved with the $15 Now campaign, which is pushing for raising the minimum wage to $15.

In Seattle, they have already succeeded. San Francisco will vote on $15 this fall. In Chicago, 21 city aldermen have put forward a call for $15. In NY, it looks as if politicians at the city and state level are moving towards $10.10 statewide with a possibility of NYC being higher, at a maximum of $13.30. We think we should aim higher.

LOCATIONS OF HAZARDOUS STREETS IN WINDSOR TERRACE

Residents with safety on their minds have joined together to focus the attention of city agencies on hazardous streets and intersections in Windsor Terrace. They are concerned about traffic safety and street safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

To help this group of residents pinpoint the neighborhood's worst trouble spots, fill out the brief survey that they've put together--"Windsor Terrace Street Safety Concerns"--and posted at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VFCKHG2. They want to hear your thoughts on the factors that contribute to a lack of pedestrian safety, and they want to know which areas you think should be taken care of first.

This summer, the group will call a public meeting of the community to share the survey results. They'll also be looking for additional volunteers to work on behalf of safety issues. They then intend to get the Department of Transportation and the NYPD involved in improving safety on the streets that you've prioritized.

If you have any questions about this effort toward safer conditions, send an e-mail to windsorterracesafety @ gmail.com.

The Windsor Terrace residents who are currently organizing this effort are Archina D'Agostino, Carlyn Kolker, Maria D'Agostino, Chris Thayer, Ryan Lynch, Lisa Perlmutter, and Jessica Foreman. Thank you, folks!

THE POSSIBILITY OF A BIGGER P.S. 130

P.S. 130

IMPORTANT MEETING REGARDING PS 130’s FUTURE!

TUES JULY 15, 2014
6:30pm at P.S.130
70 Ocean Parkway

The District 15 Community Education Council is holding a meeting Tuesday July 15, 2014 at 6:30pm, at P.S. 130.  This meeting is about the new school on Caton Ave and E 7th St, which will have a significant impact on our school community. (Childcare will be provided.)

One possibility under consideration is expanding P.S. 130 to use both buildings to create an upper and lower school (K-5).  A P.S. 130 upper and lower school would:

·       Keep our diverse community together

·       Relieve overcrowding immediately when the school opens in September 2015.

·       Provide our students with new resources like a gym, science lab, art room, library, auditorium, etc.

We urge as many parents & community members as possible to come to this meeting and help support our school!

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The meeting is open to parents of P.S. 130 students as well as anyone else in the neighborhood who is interested in learning more about the possibilities. Meet in P.S. 130 (70 Ocean Parkway) on Tuesday, July 15th, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Sign up at 6:00 p.m. to make a comment during the public comment period.

Currently under construction, and with an anticipated opening date of September 2015, P.S./I.S. 437 will seat about 750 students. The school will be bounded on the north by Kermit Place, on the south by Caton Avenue, on the east by East 8th Street, and on the west by East 7th Street.

YOU'RE GOOD TIPPERS!

Hey, zip code 11218 residents -- you're the fifth best tippers for meal delivery in all of New York City! You're proof that you don't have to be rich to be a good tipper.

ANYONE GOT ANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT KENSINGTON FOR THE SANITATION DEPARTMENT?

Q&A with the Sanitation Department
Thursday, June 26th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Sanitation Department representative Bruno Iciano will be the guest speaker at the Albemarle Neighborhood Association's monthly community meeting, the last one until September. Mr. Iciano is known for coming up with answers to people's tough questions as well as knowing which city agency or department to turn to for action.

Attend the meeting so you can tell Mr. Iciano about our neighborhood's problems, such as

  • public litter baskets getting filled beyond their capacity quickly,
  • the Sanitation Department removing needed public litter baskets,
  • residents illegally throwing their household garbage in the baskets,
  • businesses illegally putting their garbage in the baskets,
  • businesses failing to sweep the sidewalk or street in front of their building, as required by law, and
  • graffiti defacing public and private buildings and street furniture, in violation of the law.

The meeting will be held outdoors, in the street, on Albemarle Road, between E. 4th and E. 5th streets. If rain is a possibility for the evening, the meeting will be in the lobby of 415 Albemarle Road instead. Bring a chair with you if you'll want to sit down.

Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety at Ocean Parkway Intersections
Monday, June 23rd, 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday will be the one-year anniversary of the death of pedestrian Ngozi Agbim at the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Church Avenue. At a public meeting tomorrow night, Assemblymember Jim Brennan and representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation will present a plan that's intended to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety at Ocean Parkway intersections from Avenue C to Avenue I.

Methods that would be used to help reduce accidents include installing pedestrian refuge islands, upgrading signage, adjusting signal timing, and more.
