CROSSING THE STREET IN SAFETY IN WINDSOR TERRACE

Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Enforcement
Monday, March 3rd, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Goals:
       1. Keep pedestrians free from harm.
       2. Enforce traffic laws.

If you've seen streets or intersections in Windsor Terrace that pose a danger to pedestrians, Community Board 7's Transportation and Public Safety committees want to hear about them. At their joint meeting this Monday in Windsor Terrace, they need input from WT residents to find out where the problems are and their possible causes.

This is the second of two joint meetings between the Transportation Committee and the Public Safety Committee. The first one was at the community board office in Sunset Park. Streetsblog wrote about it.

This meeting will be at the Windsor Terrace Y, 1224 Prospect Avenue, at the corner of Vanderbilt Street.

Jeremy Laufer  is CB 7's District Manager. The phone number of the board office is (718) 854-0003, the fax number is (718) 436-1142, and the e-mail address is communityboard7 @ yahoo.com.

NO PRE-K AT P.S. 154

By Erik Havlik, Principal,

P.S. 154, The Windsor Terrace School

Pre-Kindergarten News

on February 25, 2014

Dear PS 154 Community:

Public School Pre-K Admissions for the 2014-2015 school year will begin on March 3rd, 2014. Before that process commences, I wanted to notify you that we are closing our Pre-K classroom.

As you might know, our community is growing and we are dealing with space constraints in our school. We need to open a new 2nd grade class next year. In order to do this, we have to close either our science lab, computer lab, or Pre-K classroom. This was a difficult decision that was made after extensive discussions with our School Leadership Team (SLT), a group that is made-up of  teachers, parents and the administration.

After careful consideration, we came to the conclusion that closing the Pre-K was our best course of action, given that our labs service roughly 523 students and our Pre-K classroom only services 18 children. I was just notified that we had permission to do this last week.

At PS 154, we deeply value our Pre-K program and wish that we were not faced with such a difficult decision. I wish you the best of luck securing an early childhood placement for the 2014-2015 school year.

Please refer to the Department of Education (DOE) web site for more information about public Pre-K in our area and the application process:  http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK/default.htm.
Information Sessions are on the Events page here:   http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK/events/default.htm.

If you’d like, you can pick up a hard copy of the Pre K directory in our main office. Please note, our school is listed in the directory because Enrollment was unable to stop printing before they let us know we were able to close the class.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Eric Havlik
Principal

ALBEMARLE SAFETY MEASURES OKAYED BY COMMUNITY BOARD

Community Board 12's Transportation Committee voted unanimously at its public hearing last night to approve the proposed safety plan for Albemarle Road. The plan had been proposed by the New York City Department of Transportation after its staff studied Albemarle's unique traffic problems.

An hour or so later, the committee chair reported to the board that it approves of the plan. The board then voted to approve the proposal, with two board members voting against it.

The three-pronged plan will
  • narrow the traffic lanes to encourage slower driving speeds,
  • construct two speed humps to slow down traffic, and
  •  post "no standing" signs for improved visibility.

Both speed humps will be installed on Albemarle, one between E. 2nd and E. 3rd and one between E. 4th and E. 5th.

"No Standing" signs have already been posted on Albemarle. One is at the southwest corner of E. 3rd Street. The other is on the northeast corner of E. 4th. The absence of a parked car at the corner improves visibility for everyone who is crossing or turning onto Albemarle Road.

SPEED HUMP OR NO SPEED HUMP? THAT IS THE QUESTION.

Transportation Committee of Community Board 12
Public Hearing on Albemarle Road Safety Plan
Tuesday, February 25th, 6:00 p.m.

Community Board 12 Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, February 25th, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Speeding has been an ongoing problem on Albemarle Road, from McDonald Avenue to Ocean Parkway. The safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers will be the subject of a public hearing tomorrow night (Tuesday) held by Community Board 12's Transportation Committee. After hearing the public's comments about the Department of Transportation's proposed traffic-calming measures, the committee will either endorse or oppose the recommendations and then present its recommendation to the community board. The measures are:

  • create two No Standing zones of one car-length each to improve visibility for drivers who are on a side street and are going to turn onto or drive across Albemarle,
  • narrow the traffic lanes to slow down vehicles, and
  • install two speed humps (NOT bumps) to slow down vehicles.

Committee meetings and the General Meetings of the community board are open to the public. The General Meetings are normally held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from September through June, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

ABOLITIONISTS, ARTISTS, SOLDIERS, EX-SLAVES, BUSINESS TYCOONS: BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATED AT GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY

Black History Month Trolley Tour
Saturday, February 22nd, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Abolitionists, artists, soldiers, ex-slaves, business tycoons.... A special Black History Month trolley tour of Green-Wood Cemetery will honor African Americans and their allies, who helped shape the course of American history.

The interesting and knowledgeable cemetery historian Jeff Richman will lead the tour, which will feature the lives and significant achievements of more than two dozen people buried in Green-Wood Cemetery.

Among the highlights will be the gravesite of Isaac Hopper (1771-1852), an abolitionist and prison reformer who devoted his life to helping others and protecting black Americans from slave kidnappers.

Hopper, whose daughter Abigail's burial place will also be visited, opened an abolitionist bookstore on Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan and was instrumental in helping Solomon Northrop publish his memoir, Twelve Years a Slave--now an Academy Award-nominated film.

Richman will introduce tour-goers to Civil War General Ormsby M. Mitchel (1810-1862), who, in 1862, envisioned and helped create the first town for escaped slaves in America--Mitchelville on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Also on the tour will be a visit to the final resting places of James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938), who co-wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing," known as the "Negro National Anthem;" Samuel E. Cornish (1795-1858), who published and edited Freedom’s Journal, the first African American newspaper in America; and world-renowned contemporary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), among others.

Some other stops will be the burial spots of

  • Dr. Susan Smith McKinney-Steward (1846-1918), first black female doctor in New York State;
  • Abigail Hopper Gibbons (1801-1893) and James S. Gibbons (1810-1892), abolitionists whose home was a stop on the Underground Railroad;
  • Margaret (1815-1865) and Scipio Franks (unknown-1875), born into slavery, she was freed then bought her husband’s freedom;
  • John E. Cook (1830-1859), abolitionist insurgent who took part in John Brown's raid on the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, hoping to trigger a slave rebellion;
  • Lewis Tappan (1788-1873), an early abolitionist who convinced former President John Quincy Adams to defend the Amistad Crew, as featured in the 1997 film Amistad;
  • Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), preacher, social reformer, and abolitionist who held auctions in Brooklyn Heights to purchase freedom for slaves;
  •  Civil War General George Crockett Strong (1832-1863), who led the African American 54th Massachusetts Regiment in the Union attack on Fort Wagner, as featured in the movie Glory;
  •  Jeremiah G. Hamilton (1806/7-1885), financial agent and New York's first black millionaire; and
  • Cedar Walton, (1934-2013), jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer.

Cost of the trolley tour: $20 for the general public; $15 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Reservations are recommended. To make a reservation online or to find out more, go to www.green-wood.com/toursevents or call (718) 210-3080.

REALLY BAD WEATHER IS FORECAST

The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory for Thursday, February 13th, and Friday, February 14th. Snow amounting to 4 to 7 inches is forecast for the Thursday morning commute.

The National Weather Service has forecast a total of 8 to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow through Friday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from midnight tonight (Wednesday) until 6:00 a.m. Friday.

The Department of Buildings is reminding property owners to de-ice public areas and safely remove snow from roofs, overhangs, and awnings. The buildup of wet snow and rain can present a threat to the structural integrity of a building.

Property owners have a legal responsibility to maintain their properties in a safe condition. If ice and snow removal is not possible, property owners should rope off the unsafe area. Don't be the reason your neighbors slip and slide and fall and get hurt!

For more information, go to http://www.nyc.gov/severeweather and read the advisory. Click here for more information on the hazardous travel advisory.
