CALL-IN CAMPAIGN FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY NEAR P.S. 130 AND P.S. 230 TOMORROW

Tomorrow is the 311 call-in campaign about traffic safety for P.S. 130 and P.S. 230. Call 311 if you're a past, present, or future parent of a student at P.S. 130 or P.S. 230 or if you simply live in the neighborhood and want everyone to be safe, yourself included.

PETITION TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS NEAR P.S. 230

An online petition to improve traffic conditions around P.S. 230 calls for
  • installing better school crossing signage,
  • creating speed bumps on the surrounding side streets, and
  • adding more school crossing guards.

Please sign the petition. Getting motorists to drive more slowly and cautiously can benefit children and people of all ages and abilities who travel in that vicinity on foot, on a bicycle, and in or on a motorized vehicle.

The petition is addressed to Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. Copies will also be delivered to our City Councilmember Brad Lander, our New York State Assemblymember Jim Brennan, and Mayor Bill de Blasio. Neighborhood parent Tara Schad posted the petition.

---------------------------------------------------------
I am writing to express my outrage at the hazardous traffic conditions surrounding both the upper school (2nd - 5th grade) building and the lower school (pre-k - 1st grade) buildings of PS 230K in Kensington, Brooklyn.  We have repeatedly reached out to NYC DOT for help addressing the dangers posed by traffic near our school.  You have failed to address our concerns or respond in any way, leaving our community frustrated.

We submitted formal requests for appropriate signage around our school to alert traffic to the presence of young children (April 21, 2014:DOT-242331-H7R7, DOT-243780-F1C1,DOT-242331-H7E7).

We formally requested more crossing guards to protect our young school children at the hazardous intersections of McDonald Ave and Albemarle Rd.  We requested speed bumps on the side streets surrounding our school buildings to inhibit drivers from approaching the school buildings at hazardous speeds.  All these requests have been ignored.

PS 230K is a large school (1,400 students) and with new rezoning effective next 2015/2016 academic year, our student population will increase.  It is the Commissioner of NYC DOT's responsibility to ensure that proper signage and safety measures are in place surrounding our school to make sure our youngest citizens are protected from dangerous traffic.  Please address these safety matters immediately.

Polly Trottenberg, you have failed to address our concerns or respond in any way, leaving parents at PS 230K angry and frustrated.  We sincerely look forward to your response in addressing our needs before it is too late.

--------------------------------------

Reminder: Tomorrow is the 311 call-in campaign about traffic safety for P.S. 130 and P.S. 230. Call 311 if you're a past, present, or future parent of a student at P.S. 130 or P.S. 230 or if you simply live in the neighborhood and want everyone to be safe, yourself included.

EAST 7TH STREET WILL CLOSE FOR ONE DAY

Pile driving activity will cause the closure of E. 7th Street all day on Tuesday, December 23rd, says Yvette Knight, Project Support Manager for the School Construction Authority.

The activity will be on the construction site for P.S./I.S. 437, the school that is scheduled to open at 701 Caton Avenue at E. 7th Street in September 2015.

P.S. 130 IS SURROUNDED BY DANGEROUS STREETS AND INTERSECTIONS

Parent Call-in Campaign
Friday, December 19th

P.S. 130 is joining P.S. 230 in demanding safer streets for the students in these neighborhood schools. Call 311 to tell the Department of Transportation that you want
  • school safety signage for all four streets surrounding the school: E. 5th Street, Fort Hamilton Parkway, Caton Avenue, and Ocean Parkway,
  • crossing guards on E. 5th Street and on both sides of Ocean Parkway at Caton Avenue,
  • a left turn signal at Caton Avenue and Ocean Parkway, and
  • the addressing of the dangerous intersection at Caton Avenue and E. 7th Street.

Report one or two of the items listed above in your call to 311. Calls can be made anonymously. You don't need to be a parent or a guardian of a child in P.S. 130 or P.S. 230 in order to make this call.

BATATA PITA BAR OPENING ON MONDAY

On Monday, December 15th, Batata Pita Bar will open, with Melissa Pony as the chef. The new restaurant will operate seven days a week, and during the winter, it will be open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Delivery service will start a week after the opening.

Co-owner Shenhav Yehzkel introduces Batata to the neighborhood by telling us that
"Batata was inspired by our love for Israeli food. We crave it, we love it, we need it.

Coming from a long family lineage of tahini and falafel makers, it felt natural to open our own little cozy and comforting neighborhood restaurant. We imagined Batata as fun and inviting; the kind of place where all of our neighbors could come to munch on delicious falafel while playing a round of backgammon, Otis Redding playing in the background.

We call it Batata, which means sweet potato in Hebrew, because it captures what we have created--a place that is humble and nourishing but also a bit of a treat. We are so excited to see our vision become a reality, and to share our enthusiasm with you.

At Batata, like our own kitchen, we believe our food should reflect our care for the environment and appreciation for the good bounty the earth provides. We use chicken that is free of antibiotics and hormones and source fresh and local ingredients.

We welcome you to Batata and hope you enjoy our food, made with love and care!"
Among the offerings will be sweet potato falafel, traditional falafel, schnitzel and waffle (their take on the classic fried chicken and waffle) and other Israeli/Middle Eastern treats, and smoothies.

LUNCH AT CALAVERAS

Enchiladas de Mole Poblano
For lunch at Calaveras, my friend had Enchiladas de Mole Poblano. The dish was spicy, like he wanted it to be. Choose chicken, cheese, or shrimp...rolled inside corn tortillas that are covered with mole poblano sauce and served with rice and refried beans. Taste: quite good! Price: $10.00.

Pollo Asado Burrito
I got Pollo Asado Burrito...a grilled chicken burrito. It was "unspicy," as promised. Taste: very enjoyable! Price: $7.00.

HOLIDAY DRIVE TO BENEFIT CHILDREN IN NEED

KWT Holiday Drive for Little Essentials
Sunday, December 14th, 9:00 a.m. to noon

Cynthia King Dance Studio will again be the collection point for children's items donated to Little Essentials. Babies and toddlers up to age 4 are in need of this helping hand.

Little Essentials is a community-based 501(c)(3) organization that enables, empowers and educates families in need.

Friends of Greenwood Playground explains
Little Essentials provides mothers living in shelters with essential items. Most importantly, it is against the law for moms to sleep in bed with their babies, so these moms need to have a place for their babies to sleep otherwise they cannot stay in the shelters. The shelters are very much in need of pack n plays, moses baskets, co-sleepers, any place where a baby can sleep other than in a grown up bed. The baby beds need to be portable so we cannot accept cribs. We are accepting gently used and new items.

On another note, by law hospitals will not allow newborn babies to leave without a car seat. Infant car seats are needed so that moms can take their babies home. In situations where moms do not have car seats, the hospitals (by law) have to call child protective services to intervene, possibly setting up a situation where a baby and mother are separated. Little Essentials tells me they get calls from hospitals (a lot) requesting a car seat to avoid this situation! We are accepting gently used and new infant car seats and strollers.
