A NEW KENSINGTON STORY, FINALLY

At long last--after a year, a month, and a week--Ron Lopez has written a new Kensington story for us, for our education and amusement. Enjoy Ron's writing style, humor, and insights as he takes you on a tour of the neighborhood he was born in, grew up in, and continues to live in--not far from where you are.

Thank you for coming back, Ron. I've missed your tales of life in Kensington with family and friends, browsing in the toy store, sitting in the classroom, playing roller hockey on the block, bowling at the local lanes, going to the Beverly Theater, and becoming an adult in this great neighborhood.

PUNCHER (UPDATE: NOT) CHARGED WITH HATE CRIME

UPDATE, 11/24/13: On Friday, the NYPD announced the charges listed below; on Saturday, the prosecutor said the charges are assault, harassment, and menacing.
-------------------------------------------------

The 66th Precinct has charged twenty-eight-year-old Amrit Marajh of Kensington with aggravated harassment in the second degree as a hate crime, third-degree assault, and third-degree assault as a hate crime.  He allegedly punched Shmuel Perl, a twenty-four-year-old Jewish man, in his head Friday morning in an attempt to knock him unconscious. Perl was wearing a yarmulke.

Marajh was one of four men in their twenties and thirties who surrounded Perl on his way home from work at 2:45 a.m. on 18th Avenue and Seton Place, not far from E. 2nd Street. After the punch was thrown, Perl remained conscious. He scrambled to his feet and fled. He called Borough Park Shomrim Patrol and told them what had happened. They, in turn, notified the NYPD.

The other three men didn't have any charges brought against them.

The Guardian Angels have begun patrolling Crown Heights and Midwood in hopes of deterring those who have violence on their minds.

"Dee Voch" magazine interviewed Mr. Perl just two hours after the attack. The interview is on YouTube.

ARRESTED MAN CHARGED WITH GROPING CRIMES

Jesse Dailey is under arrest for brushing up against a ten-year-old girl and groping her eleven-year-old friend on September 20th, groping an eleven-year-old girl on November 11th, and assaulting an undercover Special Victim’s Detective.

Two men witnessed Dailey assaulting the detective and chased him from 5th Avenue up to 6th and back down to 5th. When they caught up to him, they asked him to show them his ID, and he complied. Then one of them, forty-year-old Park Slope resident Lawrence Abdullah, photographed it.

On Tuesday, Abdullah saw on TV a photo of Dailey from a store's surveillance camera and realized it was the man he had pursued the day before. He gave the photo of Dailey's ID to police in the 78th Precinct. They went to Dailey's house on 13th Street at 6th Avenue on Wednesday and took the thirty-four-year-old into custody.

The September 20th attacks took place at about 4:30 p.m. on 5th Avenue between 10th and 12th streets. The November 11th attack took place at about 4:00 p.m. on 4th Street near 6th Avenue. The assault on the detective occurred on November 11th on 5th Avenue near 9th Street when the detective was investigating the assault that happened to the child earlier that day.

The charges against Dailey for the crimes against the children are first-degree sex abuse, forcible touching, and endangering the welfare of a child. For attacking the detective, he is charged with assault, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TAXI STANDS?

Where do you want taxi stands put in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Northern Manhattan? Those are the places the new Boro Taxis serve (the green livery cars that you can now legally hail in the street).

The Boro Taxi system was created because enough people in authority realized these facts of life: Many drivers of yellow cabs refuse to cruise the streets of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Northern Manhattan to find passengers. Many also refuse to drive passengers from Manhattan to the other four boroughs and to Northern Manhattan.

On the street map here, choose where you want the stands. The instructions on how to put your suggestions on the map are basically to move the map around until the crosshair is on the location you want, and then click on the green box that says "Suggest a Location."

You can include your reasons for choosing those locations and also pick all the times of day you'd use them--early morning, midday, evening, and late night.

If the hail symbol shown above is already on a place you were going to suggest, someone else already suggested it. Add your voice of support by clicking on "I'd use this!" You can also comment and pick the times of day you would use the stand.
