PROPOSAL TO REMOVE OBSTACLES TO GREENING OLD AND NEW BUILDINGS

The Zone Green Text Amendment (N120132ZRY), proposed by the Department of City Planning, would remove zoning barriers and modernize New York City's zoning so that building owners can, whenever possible, green their buildings more easily and more inexpensively while protecting our environment and our resources.

The amendment would effect retrofitting existing buildings and constructing new buildings with features that "help reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, generate clean and renewable energy, manage storm water on site, reduce urban heat island effect through vegetation on roofs, and otherwise promote a healthy and green city."

Features of the proposal:
  • Energy-efficient building walls
  • Sun control devices
  • Solar energy
  • Rooftop greenhouses
  • Other rooftop equipment
  • Wind energy

Every community board in the five boroughs will be holding a Public Hearing on the Zone Green Text Amendment.

Community Board 7's Public Hearing will be on Tuesday, January 24th, at 6:30 p.m., and it will be followed immediately after that by a meeting of the Land Use Committee, which will consider comments made by the public.
