STREET SALTING CAUSES FIRE

Salt spread by the Sanitation Department to melt snow near E. 2nd and Vanderbilt streets in Windsor Terrace caused a fire in underground Con Edison wires that led to two explosions, the destruction of a parked car, and a loss of electricity. A Con Edison spokesperson said "Salty snow sometimes corrode cables and spark electrical fires."
